Gas and Air Cleaning at a Galvanizing Plant

Galvanizing site
Galvanizing site
Air cleaning at a production site is indisputably necessary. Especially if the air is contaminated with dangerous chemicals, such as galvanizer products. Galvanizing plants are the worst in terms of contaminating the environment and their impact on human health. So, it's vital to choose the filter for a galvanizing plant carefully.

Entry Data and the Task Our Client Presented to Us

A client came to us for help at a factory with a galvanizing plant 21500 ft² in area.

The filter had to clean air with a nitrogen dioxide mixture, a toxic gas of the highest danger class as well as hydrogen chloride, a poisonous gas in its own right.

Choosing equipment for such a production site is complicated by the metals being subjected to corrosion and destroyed by chemicals.

The gas temperature at the entry is 86 °F. According to the client's technical task, the filter’s performance needed to be up to 1500 cfm.

Selecting the Filtration Equipment

We proposed to the client a polypropylene (plastic) packed-bed scrubber. Polypropylene can work under a temperature of up to 413 ˚F. That significantly exceeds the operating temperature in the client's factory. The wet scrubber has a large filtration surface and is not subject to corrosion, so it lasts a long time. Its parameters suit the client's technical task: performance of up to 1500 cfm.

Wet Scrubber Elements

1. Watering system in the upper part of the wet scrubber.
Stationary nozzles
Fixed-bed packing
2. Large quantity of stationary packing installed on the support grid.
Flange

3. Incoming gas flange: this is where the contaminated gas enters.

4. Circulated water tank: the circulated water tank accumulates water, cleans it, and feeds it back into circulation inside the column.

Wet Scrubber Operation System

The contaminated air goes into the entry flange and passes into the column to the packing. The packing are irrigated under constant pressure by several atomizers from the top, thanks to which the entering gas is cleaned. Located in the column is 52 cubic feet of complexly shaped packing, thanks to which an optimal area is created for water to come in contact with the gas, thus creating a large filtration area. The packing are irrigated with water or a special liquid, depending on the needs of the production site. Then, the cleaned, watered gas enters into the netlike drop collector and is ejected out using the ventilator.

Conclusions

Thus, for a galvanizing plant, we went with a polypropylene wet scrubber which corresponded to all the client's demands.
The wet scrubber material, polypropylene, helps the Torch-Air’s filter serve for a long time.
