Client
Since its foundation in 1970, the company has grown significantly, from 5,000 to 85,000 square feet. Combining today’s technology with unique knowledge, it has become a leader in manufacturing cast aluminum and copper alloy pieces. With continuous improvement at its core, the R&D department is constantly improving production methods, adding new alloys, and developing new techniques to provide a wider range of services.
Production Process
The company specializes in the production of aluminum and bronze castings, from a few grams to 380 kg. They use certified ingots and electronically controlled melting and pouring temperatures. Services include molding, finishing (shot blasting, tribofinishing, polishing, brushing), and 3D printing for prototype development. They can handle up to 100,000 units and have a quick turnaround time of 2 to 4 days for parts.
Problem
The client’s new Laempe LL20 automatic core shooter requires a scrubber to remove dimethylpropylamine (DMPA) at a rate of 2000 CFM at room temperature. The challenge lies in selecting the appropriate scrubber and ensuring it meets the required specifications for efficient operation.
Task
To provide the client with a solution, including a scrubber capable of handling the specified requirements (2000 CFM, 81 ppm DMPA), and any additional equipment such as a blower, containment dike, or automatic solution feeder to optimize operation.

What You Need to Know When Selecting Emission Control Solutions for Production Equipment - our comment

Clients often come to us after purchasing or planning to purchase equipment that requires an emission control system. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a wet scrubber or a dust collector—most often, it is some type of industrial equipment.
We usually request recommendations from the equipment manufacturer regarding the type of dust collector or scrubber that should be used with their equipment. Sometimes, manufacturers provide specific requirements, but in many cases, they are unsure about which air purification system is needed for a particular case.
This is understandable because the same equipment can operate under different conditions for different clients —varying workloads, different raw materials, and diverse environments.
However, at a minimum, when selecting a gas or dust filtration system for an industrial machine or production line, the following information is required:
  • Air volume or diameters of existing duct connections.
  • Exhaust temperature.
  • Composition of contaminants.
  • Technical documentation and drawings of the equipment.
This is the essential information needed to begin selecting the appropriate filtration system.
Below is the client’s request and a description of their requirements.

Overview of the Machine Being Installed

Simply connect it and start producing cores — the LL-series automatic core shooters are small and compact all-rounders and are easy to use. The gas unit, control unit, control cabinets, hydraulics, and cabin are already integrated and networked with each other.
Features
  • Completely integrated: Gas unit, control cabinet, control unit, hydraulics, and safety cabin.
  • For hot or cold core hardening processes.
  • Suitable for processing tools with up to 6 parts.
  • Shoot volume of 5 to 20 litres.
  • No foundation, low space requirement.
  • Low energy consumption and short setup times.
  • Short delivery times and quick assembly.

Engineer Torch-Air:
Hello!
we need the following data:
  1. Air Volume
  2. Temperature
  3. Composition of pollution
You can also fill out the attached questionnaire. If you decide to proceed, please fill out only the information you know; it is not necessary to gather all the information specified in the questionnaire.
Best regards
Client:
Good afternoon,
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. Sorry for the rather short question there, I thought I was talking to a bot that would point me in the right direction.
We need an amine scrubber for new Laempe LL20 automatic coremaker. The product to be removed is amine, more specifically dimethylpropylamine (DMPA). We require 2000 CFM at room temperature, processing about 2.2 lbs of DMPA/hour at an average concentration of 81 ppm DMPA.

Describe your problem (Reason for considering scrubber installation)

New equipment, a scrubber is required

Volume (cfm) and temperature of the gas stream to be treated.

2000 CFM, 15-30 ℃

Pressure of the process (AVG)

The suction of the blower you provide. 10in diameter outlet of the machine

Stream composition, to be specified if other than air

Component

Concentration, units to be specified

Dimethylpropylamine (DMPA)

81 ppm

Is there a material requirement for the equipment? Please specify

Integrated pH meter, pump, control panel, etc.

Operating mode of the equipment (continuous/intermittent).

Continous

Characteristics of the existing dust and gas purification system (if any).

Proposed placement of a newly developed dust and gas purification system. Space limitations or any other restrictions.

No

Is the use of an absorbent other than water being considered? If yes, it should be indicated.

I would imagine sulfuric acid

Is the scrubber operation being considered with absorbent circulation or without circulation with direct effluent?

Not sure which category this falls into

If the operation of a scrubber with circulation is considered, then replacing the absorbent in batches or with the constant addition of a reagent solution.

Client:
Thank you for the your quick response. Do you also provide the option of purchasing a containment dike?
Regards
Engineer Torch-Air:
Yes, of course. What specific size for the containment dike for the scrubber, or do you need another size?
Best regards
Client:
Specific to the scrubber you quoted please.
Regards
Engineer Torch-Air:
Such a dike will cost $2,500.
Client:
Good morning,
This does not include the blower, is this something you can provide?
And what is the automatic solution feeder?
Engineer Torch-Air:
I have added everything to our proposal.
Blower 10HP, 1760RPM, 208-230/460V, 3~, TEFC 2000 CFM - 5.2" w.c
I apologize for forgetting to answer this question. This is a dosing station for adding reagent to the scrubber liquid (it consists of a tank with a pump and a pH meter). Based on the set pH, this dosing station injects a solution into the main tank of the scrubber to maintain the specified pH within the scrubber's tank.

Proposed Solutions

Based on the detailed technical specifications provided by the client, Torch-Air recommends a tailored solution to effectively address the emission control needs for the new Laempe LL20 automatic core shooter. Our proposed solution includes:
WET SCRUBBER T-RP-2000
A polypropylene/polyethylene wet scrubber is ideal for this application. It efficiently removes dimethylpropylamine (DMPA), the contaminant produced by the core shooter, through liquid sorption. This scrubber is designed to handle the required 2000 CFM airflow at room temperature and is equipped with the necessary features to ensure effective air purification.

Key Features:
Airflow Capacity: 2000 CFM
Construction: HDPE Tank, Pipes, and Valves
Mist Eliminator: Polypropylene
Neutralization Method: Sulfuric Acid
Temperature Range: Up to 80˚C
Weight: 500 kg

Containment Dike:
A containment dike is available to prevent any potential leaks or spills during scrubber operation. The size specific to the scrubber is available for $2,500.

Blower:
A 10HP, 1760 RPM, 208-230/460V, 3-phase TEFC blower is included in the proposal, providing the necessary suction capacity for the scrubber.

Automatic Solution Feeder:
To maintain the required pH level in the scrubber tank, we offer an automatic solution feeder that includes a tank, pump, and pH meter. This system ensures continuous pH control, automatically adding the required reagent to the scrubber liquid based on set parameters.

By providing the most suitable scrubber for the client's needs and offering complementary equipment like the containment dike, blower, and automatic solution feeder, we ensure a comprehensive and efficient solution that optimizes the client's emission control system for their new production process.
