Ducted adsorption units in plants handle three duties: cleaning shop air through supply or recirculation ventilation, treating local exhaust and process vents, and handling tank vent air. Activated charcoal is the common name for the same porous sorbent, so an industrial charcoal air purifier and an adsorber loaded with activated carbon belong to one class.

Plain, Impregnated, and Catalytic Carbon

Plain activated carbon holds molecules by physical adsorption in its pores. Impregnated grades carry a reagent inside the pores and bind the target gas by chemisorption. Caustic impregnation with KOH or NaOH reacts with hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans; phosphoric acid impregnation captures ammonia and amines.
Catalytic carbon has a modified surface that oxidizes H₂S without a chemical impregnant. The reaction needs oxygen and moisture in the stream, and its products, mainly sulfur and sulfuric acid, depend on the grade and operating mode. Some catalytic grades can be restored by water washing if the unit is designed for it.

An industrial activated carbon air purifier from the Adsorbers and Dry Scrubbers category is loaded per contaminant, from plain grades to chemosorbents. Two mineral sorbents serve as alternatives: permanganate-impregnated activated alumina for H₂S, SO₂, NO, NO₂ and formaldehyde, and hydrophobic zeolites, which keep capacity in humid streams.

Unit Design

In an industrial carbon air purifier, bed volume against airflow sets contact time. Empty-bed contact time (EBCT) equals bed volume divided by the actual volumetric flow through the bed at operating temperature and pressure, in acfm. At a given velocity, bed depth and grain size set pressure drop, which the fan has to cover until the next change-out. Cartridges are swapped through hatches in the housing; a loose bed is unloaded from the vessel and replaced as a whole charge.

Sirocco Flow is a ventilation adsorber for supply, exhaust or recirculation ducts. A pocket prefilter protects the second-stage adsorption cartridges, which can be filled with activated carbon, chemosorbents or molecular sieves chosen for the contaminant. The listed specifications include airflow up to 4,000 cfm, a pressure drop of 3.2 in. w.g., operating temperature of 50–122 °F and adsorbent volume of 4.3 ft³; actual figures depend on the configuration. Inlet limits are 20 mg/m³ for dust and 10 mg/m³ for aromatic hydrocarbons.

Adsorber Filter | Overview | Sirocco for breathing valve BIG
Sirocco for reservoirs mounts on a tank flange or breathing valve and treats air in both directions: vapor displaced during filling and air drawn in during emptying. Listed specifications are 6,000 cfm airflow, 200 Pa pressure drop and an ambient temperature range of –58 to +122 °F. An insulated housing with electric heating for outdoor service, a prefilter and a droplet separator are optional.

Upstream equipment protects the carbon bed. Dust above the prefilter limit calls for cartridge dust collectors; after a wet stage, mist and droplet eliminators keep droplets off the bed; in machining exhaust, oil mist collectors remove the aerosol that would coat the granules.

Carbon Specification

Raw material and particle form are properties of a grade. Coconut-shell carbon has a larger share of micropores under 2 nm, which favors small molecules at low concentrations, while coal-based grades carry more meso- and macropores. Extruded pellets give even flow through the bed and good mechanical strength; crushed granules are specified by mesh range.

When specifying an industrial activated charcoal air purifier, request the following ASTM test data for its media:
Target-gas capacity at stream conditions comes from isotherms or tests on that compound.

Service Life and Change-Out

At a steady load and near-complete capture, service life can be estimated as t ≈ V·ρ·a / (Q·C). Here t is in hours, V is bed volume in m³, ρ apparent density in kg/m³, a working capacity in kg of contaminant per kg of sorbent, Q actual flow in m³/h and C inlet concentration in kg/m³ on the same temperature and humidity basis as Q. When capacity is stated per bed volume, the form t ≈ V·qᵥ / (Q·C) applies, with qᵥ in kg/m³ of bed; 1 g/cm³ equals 1,000 kg/m³. Converting ppm to mg/m³ requires molecular weight, temperature and pressure.

In the case below, 0.2 m³ of a grade rated at 145 kg/m³ for toluene holds 29 kg. Divided by the toluene load per hour from measured vent flow and concentration, this mass gives hours of service. Change-out comes earlier, when the outlet reaches its limit.

Working capacity comes from a data sheet or test that states concentration, humidity, temperature and the breakthrough criterion, checked for fit to the real stream. A D6646 result is accelerated and does not reproduce field conditions.

Moisture and heat both reduce physical adsorption. According to the EPA Air Pollution Control Cost Manual, water competes for adsorption sites above about 50% relative humidity, and typical operation lies between 77 and 104 °F. Reheating a humid stream lowers relative humidity and raises temperature at once, so the net effect is calculated. Grades impregnated for H₂S rely on a water film for the reaction, and the data sheet sets their humidity window.

The estimate is confirmed at the outlet with a method suited to the compound, such as an electrochemical sensor for H₂S. Detector limits and lead-lag operation are covered in the VOC article. Spent media is reactivated or disposed of after waste characterization.

Torch-Air selects activated carbon grades and chemical impregnation to match the customer's contaminants, operating conditions and required outlet concentration.
