An industrial-strength air purifier for VOCs works on a ducted stream, so the first design decision is where vapors enter the duct. General dilution ventilation of a shop moves large air volumes at low concentration, and treating all of that air calls for an oversized unit. A hood, booth or enclosure draws vapors at the source: the treated flow is smaller, the concentration higher, and a compact unit can hold a defined outlet value. Capture efficiency of the hood sets how much of the emission reaches the treatment stage at all.
Process vents from dryers, reactors, coating lines or tank breathers carry a continuous or cyclic load and usually face a permit limit at the stack. Whatever the source, ask the equipment supplier for removal efficiency on named substances with the test concentration, flow, temperature, humidity and time to breakthrough. Gas-phase air-cleaning devices are tested under ASHRAE 145.2.
