A tunnel-ventilated house 40 ft wide with an 8 ft mean cross-section needs 500 to 600 ft/min in hot weather, putting summer exhaust near 160,000 to 190,000 cfm. Winter minimum ventilation runs at a tenth of that or less, so any train faces a 10:1 turndown or takes a slice of the flow.
Pressure is the harder constraint. Direct-drive axial house fans are rated at 0.05 and 0.10 in. w.g., and delivery falls away sharply as resistance climbs. A packed bed adds 2 to 3 in. w.g. once packing, spray section and mist eliminator are counted, so bolting one onto an existing fan strips out the ventilation the flock needs. The treated stream needs its own booster. Narrowing scope to the minimum-ventilation fans shrinks the equipment and the power bill, but the same packing depth imposes the same resistance.
Cross-section follows from superficial velocity, A = Q / v. At 400 ft/min a 20,000 cfm side stream needs 50 ft2 of bed area, close to an 8 ft diameter column. Empty bed residence time is packing depth over that velocity, so 3 ft of random packing gives an EBRT of 0.45 s — true contact time is shorter, since packing and liquid hold-up take part of the volume. Full-scale monitoring of animal-house scrubbers in the Netherlands logged minimum EBRT of 0.4 to 1.1 s at average NH3 removal of 96% for acid-dosed units, 70% for biotrickling filters.
