Selection of New Scrubbers for Tanks and Repair of an Old Scrubber

logo-torch
Client
A company providing hydraulic fracturing services, engaged in drilling and oil production.
Strategically focused efforts on establishing a best-in-class hydraulic fracturing platform targeting the Texas (Permian Basin). Fleets have been designed to handle the highest-intensity, most complex hydraulic fracturing jobs, and are largely standardized across units to facilitate efficient maintenance and repair and reduce equipment downtime.
Fleet of over 1,200,000 hydraulic horsepower.
Production Process
The process of storing, loading, and unloading 12 tanks with HCL. Filling several times a week.
Problem
The old scrubber, which has been in operation for 12 years, is wearing out, and its base is cracking. The base was previously repaired using a sealant, but now it no longer helps, and it needs to be welded with plastic.
Additionally, the scrubber was painted. The reason for this is that, as the scrubber was likely made of polypropylene to save costs, it needed protection from ultraviolet radiation, since PP is not resistant to sunlight. Therefore, the scrubber was painted, and this proved effective, as the scrubber has been operating in Texas, where the summer temperatures can reach up to 125°F, and it lasted for over 12 years.
Furthermore, 6 new tanks are being introduced, each requiring its own separate scrubber.
The client was also dissatisfied with how the scrubber worked when filling the HCL tank, as there was a noticeable odor, and he asked for assistance in ensuring that the new scrubber would be able to handle the load effectively.
Task
Repair the old scrubber for tank aspiration with HCL by fixing the cracks using plastic welding and protecting the seam from UV exposure.
Select and install a new scrubber for the system of 6 tanks connected by ducts to efficiently purify the air from emissions and eliminate odors during the filling of HCL tanks.
Current system component
The existing scrubber for HCL tank aspiration requires repair. There are 6 tanks connected by ducts that need a new scrubber.
Temperature
Ambient temperature, but it can reach up to 125°F in summer.

Client Communication

Client:
Good afternoon, I have the following needs for work and products:
  1. Repair the old scrubber for tank aspiration (I am attaching photos of the cracks).
  2. Select a scrubber for a series of 6 HCL tanks connected by an 8-inch pipe.
Engineer Torch-Air:
Is the scrubber covered with something? Is the material polypropylene, because I see that the fitting on the wall is PVC, and I can’t figure out is it bulkhead fitting or is it welded to the wall?
In general we can fix the crack, but we have to clean the surface thoroughly before welding and we have to be sure about the material. We would try to weld on some unimportant part and then do the crack
Client:
Yes, that is correct. The bulkhead is welded to the wall man right now. I’m willing to give it a shot. Send me an estimate please.
Engineer Torch-Air:
Good afternoon, we are offering scrubbers based on an 8-inch pipe diameter for tank emissions treatment. I propose two options for you to choose from: a vertical or horizontal scrubber. They are essentially the same in functionality, just in different forms. Choose the one that will be more convenient for you to work with.
And I decided to send you our catalog with instructions on how to choose wet scrubbers for tanks
I am attaching an excerpt from the catalog.

Client:
I am more accustomed to using a vertical scrubber, let's go with that one. When can you come to us to carry out the plastic welding work?

Proposed Solutions

Old Scrubber Repair:
The repair of the existing scrubber was successfully carried out by cleaning the welding area and applying multiple layers of plastic welding to seal the cracks. Additionally, the seam was protected from ultraviolet exposure to prevent deformation and ensure long-lasting durability.
New Scrubber Selection:
The client selected a vertical scrubber similar to the one previously used but opted for a more advanced model. This upgraded scrubber features a greater number of nozzles inside, improving its overall efficiency. The new design allows for enhanced air purification and better handling of emissions and odors during the HCL tank filling process. Below are the key characteristics of the selected new scrubber model:
Scrubber Characteristics:
Model: Vertical Scrubber (upgraded version)
Purpose: Air purification of HCL emissions and odors.
Performance: Capable of handling up to 2000 cfm airflow, ensuring effective ventilation and air cleaning for the system.
Nozzle Configuration:
Increased number of nozzles inside the scrubber, improving the contact surface area for better liquid sorption and contaminant removal.
Scrubbing Method: Liquid sorption of contaminants, ensuring the efficient absorption of airborne particles, gases, and vapors.
Pressure Loss: The scrubber’s scrubbing column has a maximum pressure loss of 4 in. w.c., ensuring optimized airflow while minimizing energy loss.
Durability: Designed for continuous operation, the scrubber can handle challenging environmental conditions, including high temperatures, humidity, and exposure to UV radiation.

Result

The scrubber repair was successfully completed. We cleaned the welding area and welded the joint with several layers of plastic. Afterward, we protected the seam from ultraviolet radiation to prevent deformation.
The client selected a new scrubber similar to the previous one (also vertical) that they were already using but chose a more advanced model with a larger number of nozzles inside. This improved design ensures that the scrubber handles HCL tank filling emissions better, and the odor is no longer noticeable.
